Garden Update – August 20, 2022

Janet Lane offers this summary of the work at the garden on Saturday, August 20.

By 8:30 the garden was in motion with harvesting thanks to volunteers from Chinese Bible Church, Follen, Hancock and Lexington Catholic Community. We are again weighing the produce delivered to the food pantry in our notebook.

By 9:00 the first two full carts were walked over to the Food Pantry at Church of Our Redeemer. Arriving at the back door of the church, we unload the produce.

Soon the third cart arrived.

While back at the garden weeding and planting resumes. Thanks to judicious watering the garden is having a productive summer despite the drought.Reuben grabbed the pitch fork and showed us how to harvest potatoes, (he learned in his childhood from his family’s garden. We enjoyed a potato treasure hunt in the good rich earth that Carla has worked to enrich and safeguard.

Big toads and little toads hopped out of the way. Toads eat insects, snails, and slugs
so they do their part to help the Lexington Interfaith Garden. Their very sensitive skin is vulnerable to chemicals and pesticides. We were careful
not to step on their little mud clod colored bodies.

Come join us in the Fall as the harvest continues.
